Finance Manager - Flatbush Cats
Salary Range: $80,000 to $90,000 annually
Location: Remote-first role (must be based in the US), with travel to NYC 2-3 times per year
Status: Full-time exempt
Reports to: Vice President of Operations
About Flatbush Cats:
We are a mission-driven nonprofit working to end overcrowded animal shelters in NYC. Our team is collaborative, courageous, and impact-focused with a growth mindset.
We are looking for a Finance Manager who brings precision, strategy, and passion to help us scale our impact.
This role will play a crucial part in budgeting, compliance, and operational planning. This individual will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting program teams with budget insights, and ensuring the organization’s financial operations meet the highest standards of accountability and transparency.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting (35%)
Monitor accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue and expense classification, the fixed assets schedule, cash balances, and lead monthly reconciliation work (with support from Senior Bookkeeper)
Ensure all financial transactions are processed accurately, in a timely manner, and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
Assist in the management of grants including reporting, compliance with funding restrictions, and reconciliations
Prepare grant fiscal reports and track income and expenses of grants as required
Assist with administration of organizational financial and payroll systems
Financial Planning & Analysis (40%)
Lead budgeting processes, collaborating with leadership to develop and manage the annual budget to meet organizational goals
Develop and monitor budget forecasts to ensure financial stability
Create, review and share financial statements with leadership
Lead regular meetings with program leaders to review past and upcoming spending
Prepare monthly financial reports and ad-hoc summaries for program monitoring
Controls & Compliance (25%)
Develop, implement and review internal controls, policies and procedures to improve operational efficiency
Maintain best practices and compliance within the accounting function
Support the completion of tax filings and audited financial statements
Assist in the preparation of the Functional Expense Statement
Oversee risk management and insurance policy administration
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field or comparable work experience required
CPA is preferred but not required
3-5 years of relevant nonprofit management experience (other experience will be considered as well)
Experience in payroll, nonprofit GAAP accounting, and GL coding strongly preferred
Minimum Qualifications
Experience with QuickBooks Online, Payroll processing systems, Google Suite (Salesforce knowledge is a plus)
Well-honed financial data analysis abilities used to communicate insights on patterns, concerns and opportunities
Nonprofit accounting experience focused on functional expense analysis work; experience with fund/grants accounting preferred
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills, with a strong attention to detail
Strong self-discipline, analytical, time management and prioritization skills
Strong administrative skills; good research, planning, and organizational skills; strong work ethic and follow-through; and excellent attention to detail
Interest in and enthusiasm for our mission to address overcrowded animal shelters in Brooklyn and beyond
